There are many identified Mito diseases, certainly more than 40. A few of the more widely known illnesses have earned acronyms such as -

  • CPEO: Chronic Progressive External Ophthalmoplegia,

  • KSS: Kearns Sayre Syndrome,

  • LHON: Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy,

  • MELAS: Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy, Lactic Acidosis and Stroke-like episodes,

  • MERRF: Myclonic Epilepsy and Red Ragged Fibres,

  • NARP: Neurogenic muscle weakness, Ataxia and Retinitis Pigmentosa,

These conditions are relatively well known within the Mito community, but are generally unheard of in the wider medical field and certainly not familiar to the general public.
