Welcome whether you are seeking support, information or would like to contribute to raising public and medical awareness of these diseases, and improve the lives of those who endure them. There are several personal and professional web sites dedicated to information and support for folk involved with Mito. Whilst information here can no doubt be found elsewhere, this may be your first port of call on the Internet. 'Mito' is a term to describe Mitochondrial Diseases, sometimes referred to as Myopathies or Cytopathies are relatively unknown by the general public and even the medical community, they are often incorrectly diagnosed or not recognised at all. At best these diseases severely compromise quality of life and in some cases can be fatal. Presently there is no cure for any form of Mito, only methods of symptom management. There seems to be a growing opinion that research into Mito will benefit research and treatment of diseases already in the public eye. Of note are Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and some forms of depression. As the mitochondria are fundamental to the functioning of all the body's systems it seems reasonable to assume any progress made in this field will benefit health generally. High profile diseases receive greater funding for research than Mito. Awareness needs to be raised in the general public and medical arena for the benefit of us all, Mitos and non-Mitos alike. |
